Desk Opportunities

Working at the front desk is one of the best ways to get involved in your residence hall community, meet other students, and make money at the same time. Each residence hall desk is staff by students who live in the residence hall(s) served by that desk. Check out the position descriptions below to learn more about these positions. Further questions can be directed to the Residence Hall Director who supervises that desk.

Residence Hall Desk Receptionist

General Position Description

Qualifications include: Currently enrolled at CMU; at least a 2.0 GPA; must not be on academic or social probation; basic knowledge of campus facilities and activities; familiar with name of buildings and where they are located; familiarity with residence hall staff and their responsibilities, as well as with residence hall policies and regulations; positive and professional work attitude; prompt in reporting for work; attend safety, Right to Know, and other employee meetings as scheduled; and must live in the residence hall.

Responsibilities include: Work at the residence hall desk for 8 to 10 hours a week or more; substitute work when available; responsible for assigned hours and must arrange for a substitute within your group if you cannot work; responsible and accountable for money (change fund, stamp fund, vending refunds) kept at the desk; answer phones; abide by all residence hall regulations and desk policies; attend desk receptionist meetings; refer people to Residence Hall Director, Resident Assistants, and Multicultural Advisor; handle all equipment check-out and check-in such as tools and pool table equipment.

Residence Hall Desk Manager

General Position Description

Qualifications include: Currently enrolled at CMU; at least a 2.0 GPA; basic knowledge of campus facilities and activities; familiar with name of buildings and where they are located; familiarity with residence hall staff and their responsibilities, as well as with residence hall policies and regulations; positive and professional work attitude; prompt in reporting for work; attend safety, Right To Know, and other employee meetings as scheduled; must live in the residence hall.

Responsibilities include: Work at the residence hall desk for 8 to 10 hours a week or more; substitute work when available; responsible for assigned hours and must arrange for a substitute within the desk group if cannot work; responsible and accountable for money (charge fund, stamp fund, vending refunds) kept as desk; answer phones; abide by all residence hall regulations and desk policies; attend desk receptionist meetings; refer people to Residence Hall Director, Resident Assistants, and Multicultural Advisor; handle all equipment, check-out and check-in such as tools and pool table equipment; keep desk supplied with change; assist with timekeeping system and payroll; check supplies used at desk and inform RHD when additional stock is needed; check cash accounts sheets at least once per day and report variances to RHD; make bank runs and count the safe; assist in interviewing desk applicants; assists in evaluating desk receptionist; compile work schedule so that desk is covered at all times; attend weekly or bi-weekly meeting with RHD; weekend and other on-call as needed; other duties as assigned.
