GETTING A TUTOR: Policies and Procedures

When should I get a tutor?
Early! Anytime you are worried about a class, or when you get a test or paper grade that is lower than you want, or if you study better with someone, get a tutor.

How do I apply?

Applying is easy. Simply go to the Academic Assistance Office in Ronan Hall 250 and fill out an "Application for Tutoring Services" form.

Who qualifies?
Any undergraduate student currently enrolled in classes at CMU, regardless of overall GPA or current average in class.

Can I get a tutor for any class?
Tutoring is available for most 100, 200, 300 and 400 level courses. Sign up for tutoring in the Academic Assistance Office, Ronan Hall 250. For more information, call the office at 989-774-3465.

Am I assured of always getting a tutor?
We can assure you that we will make every effort to find a suitable tutor.

How much tutoring can I have?
CMU will pay for up to 3 hours of tutoring per week.

When does tutoring begin and end?
Tutoring begins the second full week of classes and ends one week before final exam week.

When and where do I meet my tutor?
You will contact your tutor to make an appointment. You and your tutor then establish a time and place that is convenient for both of you to meet. Tutoring always takes place on campus and in a public area.

What are my responsibilities?
Continue attending every class. Complete your reading and homework assignments before each tutoring session. Come to the tutoring session with a purpose; a goal in mind. Bring your questions, your textbook, your notes and your homework. Be courteous. Show up on time and CALL your tutor as soon as possible if you will have to miss a session.

Just a reminder ..... there are hundreds of study skills and tutorial sites on the internet. We would suggest you follow sites sponsored by institutions of higher education.

BECOMING A TUTOR: Policies and Procedures

  • Any undergraduate or graduate CMU student may apply to be a tutor. The applicant must have a MINIMUM overall GPA of 3.0 and have earned a grade of no lower than a A- in the course to be tutored.
  • Secondly, prospective tutors need approval from the department in which the class is offered or from Academic Assistance Programs.
  • Tutors are expected to set up days and times to meet with students and should group them to meet at the same time when possible.
  • Tutors may set a limit on how many hours they are willing to work.

Process for becoming a tutor:

  • Pick up an application from the Academic Assistance office, Ronan Hall 250.
  • Fill out the application and have it signed by the chair of the department or the professor, unless you already have prior approval via faculty recommendation.
  • Return the completed and signed form to the Academic Assistance office, Ronan Hall 250, and set up an interview appointment.
  • Tutors are required to attend update sessions as scheduled throughout the semester.
  • Please Note: Students who are already employed by the University may not work more than a total of 50 hours per two week pay period when combining that job and tutoring.
