Hazardous Waste

Risk Management, Environmental Health & Safety (RMEHS) collects and disposes the hazardous waste generated by operations at the Central Michigan University (CMU).  In order to maintain compliance with strict federal and state regulations, waste generators must follow the RMEHS-designed protocols for proper disposal of chemical waste.  Following the protocols for managing hazardous waste reduces costs, ensures regulatory compliance, maintains a safe workplace, and protects the environment.

Contact RMEHS at (989) 774-7398 or email environmental@cmich.edu for questions about, or assistance with, these protocols or for consultation about any special waste streams anticipated from your activity.

General Guidelines for Managing Chemical Waste

  • Always employ Waste Minimization Plan techniques – use only the volume of chemical necessary for the operation being performed and do not order more than is necessary.
  • Affix the HAZARDOUS WASTE CONTAINER LABEL to the waste container prior to adding any waste to it and be sure to mark the date the first drop of waste is added to the container.
  • Ensure the HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL FORM and HAZARDOUS WASTE CONTAINER LABEL are properly filled out.

Preparing Hazardous Waste for Collection

The following process describes what laboratory personnel must do to prepare chemical waste for collection:

  • If you have more than one Hazardous Waste Container, please fill out the Hazardous Waste Bulk Submission Form and attach it in the Hazardous Waste Disposal Form.
  • Store chemical waste in a safe, accessible, and easily identifiable location for RMEHS personnel to inspect for completeness and transport
  • Ensure that containers are properly sealed
